Posted in Catskill Places, Catskill Region, Hunter Mountain, Phoenicia, Windham, Woodstock by admin on March 31st, 2008
The Catskill Mountains are 150 miles north from New York City, which is about a 1 1/2 to 2 hours drive. There you will find fresh open air, an abundance of outdoor actiivities and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great getaway for honeymooning couples, families and for all.
Here are the some of the best places to visit in the Catskills:
- Woodstock - the town is the true woodstock of the festival fame and not only does it have some great shops but the village green in the center of town is a must to see. There are local theater companies with some public performances. Best times to visit is Summer and Fall.
- Hunter Mountain Ski Resort - which is located in three small towns: Hunter, Tannersville and Haines Falls
- Windham - is a charming small town with outstanding shops and restaurants and home to Ski Windham Ski Resort
- Phoenicia - is the portal to southern Catskills and also the place where rafting is popular on the Esopus River. You can enjoy some great restaurants and shopping, or if you are adventurous can take a trip rafting or tubing down the Esopus River. The Belleayre Mountain Ski Resort is further up the road, about 20 miles, as well as the world’s largest kaleidoscope which is located in Emerson Place south of the town.
- North and South Lake Campground and Woodland Valley campground - top two popular state run camp grounds. Basic services are provided but don’t expect electricity or water as they don’t have on camp sites.
- Kaateskill Falls - is the highest waterfall in New York State and located in Northeastern Catskills, just south of North and South Lake. It is one of the many spectacular waterfalls in the Catskills and a must to see.
Words cannot describe or give an accurate picture of the Catskill region until you see for yourself how wonderful and amazing the place is. The best time to visit is Summer or Fall, unless if you are an avid skier then Winter. Anytime is the right time to visit the Catskills.
