The Beauty of Spain On a Budget

Posted in Budget Travel, Worldwide Travel Destinations  by admin on July 31st, 2008

SpainBefore, it may have been possible to travel to Spain with a tight budget. It has been a favorite destination in Western Europe for those who don?t have much to spend. However, since its inclusion in the European Union, the country has progressed considerably ? also significantly adding to the price you would have to pay to take a vacation there, particularly if you take into consideration the current state of the dollar against the euro. But don?t worry! With the tips included in this article, you can stay in Spain even without clearing your bank account.

For starters, let?s look at accommodations. There are available places to stay in Spain, if you?re not too picky about the facilities included in each room. You will only have to spend a minimum of 13 euros every night to stay in Salamanca?s Pension Barez.

Instead of opting for a hotel, you can run up a search for the words ?Pension? or ?Fonda? when looking for a place to stay. These are small businesses, usually run by a whole family, which offer a few rooms. Admittedly, there are places like these in seedy neighborhoods, but others can be found right in the center of commerce and in highly urban areas. When staying in these places, you might want to eat out instead, and the furnishings in your room may not be up to your expectations, but at least you will get a clean and decent (albet small) room, and you will be warmly received.

As for food, you can get a light snack of a tapa and a beer for three euro in Manolo?s, located in Plaza Alfalfa. At the northern part of the country, ask for pinchos, which is essentially the same as tapas. However, don?t over-gorge on the tapas; you might end up with a heavier bill as compared to just getting a set meal at a cheap restaurant.

Set meals that have bread, wine, and dessert are also available at a relative cheap price, but remember that if you order something not included in the set, you will be charged more. Visit Quatre Gats in Barcelona, where you can get fine cuisine in a bistro that has excellent art deco ambience for only 13 euro. It helps to remember that in Spain, bars will jack up their prices when the clock nears midnight in preparation for the nightlife.

Transportation costs should not be a problem, as long as you take the bus instead of the train. Buses always cost less, and they are faster as well. When visiting historic sites, you will find that you might always have to pay a fee to get in, but there are certain days when these sites charge no admission at all. In addition, make sure to drop by municipal museums. You can also visit a flamenco wedding in Sevilleor see mime artists in Barcelona. These are absolutely free, and you get to immerse yourself in rich Spanish culture.

Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Toledo are some of the best places to visit in Spain.
