Where To Stay In The Catskills
The Catskills located in upstate New York is a vacation destination for three seasons: Summer, Fall & Winter. Warm sunny days and bright wildflowers makes Summer a pleasure. The colors and foliage of Fall aligning forests and mountainsides gives a breathtaking view of the magnificent scenery. Skiing down slopes at Bellayre, Windam or Hunter mountains in Winter just can’t be beat. Spring is mud season in the Catskill region, therefore isn’t a recommended time to visit.
Here are some recommended places to stay in the Catskills:
Woodstock Inn - located on the Millstream at 38 Tannery Brook Road in the famed town of Woodstock. It’s a 1940’s motel that was restored and is right beside a classic swimming hole that is great for cooling off on a hot summer day. Enjoy a continental breakfast in their sun room before you explore the town. If you want to catch the Woodstock Film Festival, it takes place annually in the Fall. The star-gazing night skies, natural mountain beauty and the peaceful easy feeling the town of Woodstock provides makes it a must stop on any visit to the Catskills.
Kate’s Lazy Meadow- located in Mount Tremper, 20 minutes from Woodstock, and owned by the B-52’s Kate Pierson. It was initially purchased when it was a rundown motel and has since been turned into 1950’s dream getaway with each cabin brimming with its own style.
Mohonk Mountain House - a Victorian castle with 251 rooms is surrounded by thousands of acres of Catskills forest and winding trails. Great for hiking. You can also relax on one of the many rocking-chairs on their wide deck that overlooks the deep-blue waters of Lake Mohonk. The lodgings aren’t fancy and the service may not be fast but the amazing scenery makes up for any shortfalls. This is also where scenes were filmed of the movie Dirty Dancing.
Kutshers Country Club - has an 18-course golf course which is a lure for avid golfers. Even though it has been upgraded and updated, it isn’t the most attractive place to stay but the plus is, besides the golf, that it has affordable rooms and provides three plentiful meals a day.
Scribner Hollow Lodge - the best views of any Catskills lodging can be found here as it overlooks Hunter Mountain, which is one of the tallest peaks located in the Catskills. You will find in some of the guest rooms a fireplace as well as a private balcony. The lodge has one of the best restaurants located in the Catskills, having won the Wine Spectator magazine’s Award of Excellence numerous times and also throughout the year features wine-tasting dinners.
River Run B&B - this classic Victorian mansion was converted into a B&B and is located in the town of Fleishmanns. It’s the most pet-friendly place you will find in the Catsklls, so bring along your well-behaved dog. Enjoy a run with your dog into the Catskills Forest Preserve, up to Bellayre Mountain, or down by one of the trout streams that flow right outside River Run B&B.
